Why language is a payments problem in Toronto
In the 2021 Census, 46.6% of people in the Toronto area were born outside Canada, and 26.3% of Toronto residents speak mainly a language other than English or French at home. The most common of those at home are Mandarin (86,150 speakers), Cantonese (74,845), Tagalog (51,355), Spanish (46,355) and Tamil (40,825). For a shop, a restaurant or a clinic that is not a statistic — it is the queue. A customer who cannot ask whether a card will work, or why a deposit is being held, usually does not ask twice.
